Down below, Bill Zonka laughed out loud. "Holy shit." He scrambled into his office knowing that things were going to start flying around in the factory again. He didn't exactly want to be there when it happened. He stood against the wall and peered out through his office window, not quite believing what he was seeing. "Got some balls. Gotta give it to 'em."
The dangling apatosaurus had shaken loose from its netting during the rough trip over. The tail dangled off one end, and the limp, heavy head on its elongated neck was dangling partially out the other end. They swayed and stirred up the clouds of cold vapor clinging over the surface of the liquid in the vat. The extreme cold of the vapor must have done something to the head, because when it swung momentarily free of the mists Bill Zonka was alarmed to see that the eyes of the prehistoric creature had popped open.
"Oh God, thing ain't dead, thing ain't dead."
He hid himself behind the wall, not daring to look out the window of his office, as if the thing would reanimate, escape the steel mesh netting, jump to the ground and come after him. He stood there quaking in his shoes and his stained T-shirt. Finally, he got the nerve to look out the window again. The massive neck and head of the apatosaurus were still swinging, the eyes were still open, but they had absorbed a covering of ice from the cold radiating from the liquid in the vat.
The eyes were dull and blank. It was dead. Of course it was dead. The eyes had opened from some sort of a reaction of the cold on the nerves.
And down came the gigantic roaring helicopter, inch by agonizing inch, until the dinosaur's head disappeared into the vat, and then the tip of the tail and then the body itself touched the mist and vanished into the vat. And just as Bill Zonka was feeling a little bit more like his old ballsy self, just as he was reaching for the door, the interior of the factory vanished from sight.
"What the hell, man?" Bill Zonka said aloud. "What the hell?"
Outside of his window there was nothing but white. They had warned him about the boil-off, but he hadn't really been paying attention. How was some mist gonna hurt him?
The weight of that creature was tremendous and its residual body heat had reacted with the vat of liquid nitrogen, transforming the surface nitrogen instantly into clouds of nitrogen steam and blanketing the factory with a fog like something out of a cheap horror movie.
Bill Zonka sat at his desk and drummed his fingers and watched the agitated whiteness that covered his window, feeling strangely isolated. All he could see was white, and all he could hear was the huge roar of the helicopter, which must have been hovering mere inches over the top of the factory.
Bill Zonka had wished to God he had never volunteered for this whole endeavor.
